Callooh Callay!

–Beverly Toegold V

Beverly Toegold V is an acne-ridden, braces-wearing Halfling Paladin, and a very good boy, played by Caldwell Tanner. Beverly is a just Green Knight paladin following the Faith of Pelor in pursuit of all the merit patches.

Bio[]

Beverly Toegold V starts out as a fifteen year old Green Teen from Galaderon. He is the fifth of his name and his father is the captain of the Green Knights.

Appearance[]

Beverly is a halfling. He has braces and acne and is originally described as having blond hair. After the groups' first meeting with the Watchman, he has a large scar on his forehead.

Role in The Story[]

The Moonstone Saga[]

Beverly Toegold first appears when he steps out of his carriage and enters The Hungry Trout Inn & Tavern in Moonstone.

As a simple Green Teen scout, Beverly has come to attend the Jamboreen under the guidance of Scoutmaster Denny. When Denny admits that he's lost the other teens, and that the Jamboreen has been canceled, Beverly recalls Denny's renowned sense of humor and concludes that there is no real danger. Denny is unable to convince Beverly otherwise, but succeeds in uniting the Halfling with Hardwon Surefoot and Moonshine Cybin to form a rescue team which would come to be known as the Band of Boobs. Beverly joins eagerly under the premise that this rescue will serve as his graduation test from the Green Teens, marking him as a young Green Knight, and that Hardwon and Moonshine are his new scoutmasters.

On their way out of the tavern, Beverly cannot help but leave a note reading 'You are very rude' at the table of some uncouth barbarians associated with the powerful Cracked Tooth Clan, which had recently conquered the village. The barbarians responded violently, but did not manage to intimidate the Band of Boobs. Young Beverly, after asking Scoutmaster Denny for permission, joins in the bloodbath, and, after reciting the entire Green Teen creed, decapitates a foe.

This was Beverly's first kill, and serves as a major turning point in the halfling's life. Though his devotion to justice has never wavered, his methods for achieving this justice are no longer quite so innocent; indeed, since this time, he has never again written notes to his enemies before smiting them.

After leaving the tavern, Beverly and his new companions travel to the Temple to Melora, where they meet the enchanting, ageless druid named Shae. The band soon heads for the swamp, where they hope to find the missing Teens.

In the swamp, Beverly proves to be a tad headstrong, at one point nearly dooming the party with his insistence that he can perform a female bullywug's mating call. The group has to rescue Beverly's companions from the Sunken Keep where the Bullywug King had sold the Teens to a group of Kobolds. Ultimately, Beverly is reunited with his Green Teen friends Erlin, Derlin, and Cran, and safely leads them back to Moonstone village.

Back in town, the Band of Boobs quickly realizes that something is terribly wrong. They send the children to the Temple to Melora and dash back the Hungry Trout, where they find the barbarians flaunting their power and wielding Mother Thistle's trident. Hardwon initiates a grand battle which would come to be known as the Moonstone Massacre while Beverly crawls around looking for a back door of the inn. Despite Beverly's efforts, the bartender Mishka would finally perish in combat.

While the heroes ultimately emerged victorious, their victory felt hollow for the loss of one so beloved. In mourning, Beverly joined Hardwon and Moonshine in drinking away their sorrows. Beverly is amazed at the new sensation of drunkenness, and proposes going back to visit Shae to ask for guidance. Unwilling to part from his cups, Beverly teaches his friends about the 'walk-me-down,' wherein one takes their final cup of alcohol to-go.

Beverly embraces Erlin at the Temple, pleased to see that everyone there had survived the ordeal (even Scoutmaster Denny, to Moonshine's great disappointment.) Shea admonishes the newly-christened scoutmasters for allowing the boy to drink, but realizes that he's become a mature killer in his own right, and permits him to do as he pleases. Beverly has since nurtured a minor alcohol addiction.

In the aftermath of the Moonstone Massacre, Shae began to speak to the townspeople about the resiliency of the survivors and the memory of the fallen, including the recently-deceased Mother Thistle, but she is rudely interrupted by Scoutmaster Denny. He praises Beverly's diligence and successes over the past few days, saying that, if Beverly can earn his Animal Relations Badge, he will demonstrate readiness for promotion into the Green Knights. Beverly casts Commune with Animals on Paw Paw Gump and thanks the possum for his service, thus earning his badge.

The long-awaited Jamboreen finally begins, in the midst of which Beverly and his scoutmasters Hardwon Surefoot and Moonshine Cybin recite the Green Knight's Plight. Denny afterwards bestows Beverly a suit of green scalemail, saying that he passed his six-leaf examination and officially promoting him from the ranks of the Green Teens to those of the Green Knights. Denny finally passes Beverly a note from his father, who sternly congratulates him on his accomplishment and beckons Beverly back home to Galaderon to attend the inauguration of a new High Septon two weeks hence.

Beverly asks Moonshine and Hardwon to accompany him on the journey home, and they, who apparently have no other plans of any sort, instantly agree. After hatching a young dragon, Mishka Beverly Paw Paw II, to act as the village's new guardian, the Band of Boobs rides out of Moonstone on Bojangles, the horse-riding horse mayor of the village.

The Ezry Chronicles[]

The Band of Boobs arrives in Ezry, where Beverly's parents keep a summer home, a few days after leaving Moonstone.

They approach Ray and another guard at the city gate, and Beverly innocently expresses that they have an item they wish to have appraised. Realizing that he has risked getting the group mugged, Beverly shows the guards Amulet of Thiala rather than the evil sword. The platinum amulet very much interests Ray, but on Moonshine's insistence the group proceeds inward.

After meeting a mercenary named Stunkbug and asking his help entering Ezry's Inner Ring, Beverly reveals his nickname, 'Bubble Boy.' He received this nickname after being bullied as a child and forced to drink the soapy solution used for blowing bubbles. Despite the negative associations of the name, Beverly hopes that using this nickname will help ingratiate the Band of Boobs with Stunkbug. Hardwon believes that Beverly has secured such a wonderful relationship that he proposes going directly into Stunkbug's home, but the orc refuses, suggesting that the group wait for him in the The Blue Mana Inn tapas bar.

Before revealing that he uses a dry shampoo that sometimes doesn't work, Beverly decides to accompany Stunkbug to the town barracks, where he meets Lieutenant Bricker and Captain Oswald. Beverly interviews Bricker to help him prepare to receive his Law Enforcement Patch. She teaches him about the importance of following the rules while Beverly takes detailed notes, then gives Beverly an Honorary Police Chief Badge.

Afterwards, Beverly and Stunkbug travel to the The Blue Mana Inn, where Hardwon and Moonshine have already begun to enjoy the evening. Beverly orders a Sprite but settles for a Cherry 7-Up with freshly-crushed cherries and a miniature umbrella. Once everyone has eaten their fill of sliders, they depart for Professor Duttle's laboratory.

Juan lets them inside the lab, and Beverly feels jealous of Duttle, for he has always wanted an automaton of his own. Before the group goes to the the professor, Beverly places a coin into Juan's mouth, hoping it will cause the robot to dance happily. Juan, though, feels he is being mocked for his inorganic body, and Beverly quickly apologizes. Stunkbug predicts Juan will need at least three sessions with his therapist to heal the hurt of this insult.

The group proceeds further inside the lab and meet Professor Duttle himself. As the professor prepares to transfer the weapon bonuses of their cursed sword into a more suitable weapon, Beverly forgets that he uses only one hand to wield his sword, as his other hand is occupied with his shield. After the benefits of a cursed blade are transferred into Hardwon's greataxe, the team leaves for the Bone and Barrel Tavern, where Stunkbug believes he can find his nemesis, Skullis.

Back in the Outer Ring, Beverly gets mocked on the streets for being a Bubble Boy, so Moonshine helps to disguise him as a maid. They reach the bar and enter, then approach the R. Caine dealer Reeva. Beverly whips out a large bag of gold to demonstrate their ability to pay for a vial of R. Caine, attracting attention from customers all over the bar, but again does not get mugged.

The Road to Galaderon[]

While escaping Ezry after killing Duttle and blowing up his lab, the Band of Boobs encounter a gnome riding away from the city on a Dune Buggy. Moonshine scoops him on sight, causing Hardwon to put Beverly in the Buggy to drive it, which he rolls a natural twenty to do. After the scooping shenanigans are over, the gnome introduces himself as Tonathan Tinkle, a wizard on a mission to meet the Watchman, an oracle like demigod who sees everything that happens on the material claim and will answer one question per visitor.

The four of them meet Uku, a goliath who's life's purpose is making sure that only the worthy get to visit the Watchman. He attempts to prank the Boobs by trying to trick them into eating a berry that makes you vomit, but realizes they've already been goofed by another goliath. They complete Uku's trials and each get a chance to ask the Watchman a question. Bev asks why Thiala's amulet has a crack in it. The Watchman answers that it shattered after Thiala broke her oath with Pelor. Bev is heartbroken by this and remembers his father's rule not to goof. Now thinking rules are meaningless, he attempts to goof the Watchman, asking if he'd like one of the vomit berries. The Watchman blows Beverly off of his tower and he falls to the ground. Hardwon, Moonshine and Tonathan find Bev crying with broken legs. Hardwon and Moonshine begin to take him home to Galaderon to be healed, after Moonshine removes his humor patch.

The Galaderon Saga[]

Beverly returns to his hometown of Galaderon with broken legs and a lot of trauma. He meets Ol' Cobb on the way to the highest level of the city where his parents live. His mother Martha is very worried about her baby boy, while his father Beverly Toegold IV. is happy to see his son, but concerned he wasn't ready to go out into the world after seeing his broken legs. Bev's legs are healed by Merrick High Hill, a family friend and royal advisor to the Boy King. He also is visited by Galad Rosell, the White Rose of Galaderon, and a personal hero to Bev. While Galad visits, he is attacked by the Widow, and the Boobs help him defend Bev's house. The next morning is is revealed that Merrick High Hill has been murdered and Bev Sr is the prime suspect.

Things aren't looking good at Bev Sr's trial, partially due to his lawyer Duncan Pebblepot, so Bev invokes a trial by combat, where he faces The Crag. The Crag manages to defeat Bev, but Moonshine is able to delay Bev Sr's execution by suggesting an execution party during the weekend. Bev Sr says goodbye to Bev and tells him to read his unsent letters, which Bev finds. They contain all kinds of messages he was too scared to send about how much he loves his son and how scared he was to lose him like he lost his brothers.

Bev, Hardwon, Moonshine and Cobb plan a prison break where they sneak under Galaderon castle and eventually save Bev Sr. They fight and defeat Galad Rosell, who is revealed to have killed Hardwon's parents. They then attempt to sneak out through the burgeoning Galaderon Civil War. They fight the Chosen and are able to fly away to safety, though his house burns down. Bev Sr returns to the Green Knights and tries to help them escape, while Bev saves his mother, Erlin, and Erlin's family. While they escape, the Green Knights are surrounded and hiding in their church. Bev prays along with Erlin to open a portal to the Feywild, which he is able to do. His father escapes to another realm and Bev kisses Erlin for the first time.

Tales From the Crick[]

Bev and the Boobs try to help Ulfgar, who they rescued from Thiala's influence after being attacked by him during the Galaderon Civil War. He explains that he contracted Crick Rot in Hell and that he will be too violent to help until they cure the disease. They decide to head to the Crick to try to save Ulfgar, along with Moonshine's home. On the hike to the Crick the Boobs meet a traveling salesman named Thrifty Schwifty who offers them a chance to draw from the Deck of Many Things. Bev draws the knight card, summoning a fourth level fighter with no memory named Balnor, who becomes his loyal protector and a father figure.

Bev gets out of his comfort zone and has a good time in the Crick, making friends with the Yungins and trying the local cuisine. He and the others plan to defeat Marabelle so they can cure Crick Rot, which Mee Maw says is only possible if they visit the ancient plane known as the Elemental Chaos and become the champions of the four elemental titans. Bev is the final Boob to become a Champion and is chosen to represent the Fire Elemental.

The Boobs head into the Living Wood to defeat Marabelle and fight their way through corrupted snakes and ents. Beverly is able to sense an evil presence within a cave and finds the Cursed Book of Illsed, which he is able to open with the help of his amulet.

Beverly is able to lead the team to Marabelle's lair using his ability to sense evil. Once there, Beverly falls under Marabelle's control, hallucinating that she is his own mother. He defends her and takes hits to protect her, but is eventually freed from her control. When Marabelle is defeated he parties with the rest of the Crick and uses his resistance to fire to impress the Yungins.

The Cutthroat Chronicles[]

Beverly and the Boobs(minus Ol' Cobb, who decides to take a break from adventuring to focus on his mental health and deal with what happened to Marabelle) head to Smuggler's Bounty for an awesome vacation. Once there, they encounter a field elf named Apple Scrumper, who is in a fight with a local arcade she thinks cheated her. The Boobs agree to help her and enter the Giant Shredder, a snowboarding game(although Bev is somehow wearing skis). Bev does poorly in the game and is called out for his privilege and given the nickname Beeferly Slowgold. Ultimately, the team wins the game and 2,560 gold.

While Moonshine and Balnor go off with two devils for a four way, Bev and Hardwon hang out at a bar and meet a pirate named Yarn, who implies he is going to have a big score soon. After Bev casts Zone of Truth on him, Yarn reveals that his crew has captured Ulfgar and are going to sell him for a huge profit.

The team makes a plan where Bev will pose as a fancy lad and pretend to be interested in buying Ulfgar. Before they head out, Bev talks to the giant bartender Heurog, who reveals that he was separated from his family during the Giant Wars and has been living on Smuggler's Bounty ever since. Bev feels bad, as a lot of his family fought against the giants during the war, and he starts questioning his point of view.

The team tries to sneak on Snot's Yacht, but Moonshine is caught. Bev tries to cover for her and Moonshine claims he is her son, which the pirates don't buy. After about five failed lies, the Boobs are attacked by Snot's Lot. Bev initially does well in the fight, removing one of the pirates from the fight by casting Command and making him jump out of the boat and swim in the ocean. He also is able to destroy the ship's steering wheel, preventing a possible escape from the pirates. Unfortunately, he is overwhelmed and downed along with every party member but Apple. Luckily, he stabilizes and Apple is able to prevent everyone from dying.

After the Boobs wake up, they go to raid Snot's treasure room and find a myriad of magical items, including Boots of Speed, which Bev claims and redubs the Yippie Skippy boots. They also find a letter, which Bev is the only one capable of reading, from the man who wanted to buy Ulfgar, a mysterious devil named Akarot. The Boobs realize that he will be coming to collect soon and sneak past devils to the airship. They make it, but are caught when the ship starts and fight off the devils as the head to the Field to bring Apple home.

On the Road Again[]

After dropping off Apple, Bev recieves a telepathic message from his friend Tonathan warning that the Watchtower is under attack by the Chosen and that they need to know where he is. Bev tells him that the Boobs are near the Field and Uku and Tonathan teleport to them and give them Crick Water that sends them to the Elemental Chaos, where they can talk without being perceived by the Watchman.

Uku explains that they need to kill the Watchman because he will indiscriminately give information to the Chosen if they are able to get to him, which the Boobs question but ultimately agree to, with the understanding that they will give the Watchman a chance to go with them after they wear him down a little. Bev thinks that he will need a little more magic to go against the Watchman and asks to study some of Tonathan's wizard books. Tonathan suggests that he channels his beautiful boy voice into studying bard magic. The two stay up way too late goofing around and Bev gains the Magic Initiate feat.

The Boobs teleport to the Watchman and begin the fight. Bev is paralyzed by one of the Watchman's rays, but the musk from his aura is able to protect the rest of the party. This frustrates the Watchman, who focuses on Bev a bit too much. The Boobs are able to kill the Watchman and Uku sacrifices himself so that the other monks and the Boobs can escape the Chosen.

Powers and Abilities[]

Racial Abilities[]

  • Lucky. When rolling a natural 1 on an attack, ability check, or saving throw, Beverly can reroll the die.
  • Brave. Bev has advantage on saving throws against being frightened.
  • Halfling Nimbleness. Not that this matters in a theater-of-the-mind game, but Beverly can move through the space of a creature larger than him.
  • Naturally Stealthy. Allows Bev to hide behind any creature larger than him, which is adorable.

Class Abilities[]

  • Divine Sense. Beverly can sense any celestial, fiend, or undead within 60 feet of him.
  • Lay on Hands. Also known as Touch Hands, Beverly has a pool of 100 (Paladin level x 5) hp that restores over a long rest. He can use this pool to heal a creature, up to the amount left in the pool. He needs to be able to touch the creature. "I Touch Hands 'em for 20 health."
  • Fighting style: Dueling. When wielding a melee weapon, Beverly gets a +2 bonus to damage rolls with that weapon.
  • Divine Smite. Bev can expend a spell slot to deal additional radiant damage when attacking with a melee weapon.
  • Oath of Ancients. Originally sworn to the Oath of the Ancients to Pelor, Beverly switched to the Oath of Vengeance after learning that his father had made a deal with Akarot.[1] However, after defeating Akarot and the death of Pelor, Beverly once again swore an Oath of Ancients: this time to Melora and to Bahumia itself.
    • Channel Divinity. Beverly can either use Nature's Wrath or Turn the Faithless. When he uses Nature's Wrath, a creature must succeed on a Strength or Dexterity saving throw (its choice) or be restrained. When he uses Turn the Faithless, each fey or fiend within 30 feet of him that can hear him must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature is turned for 1 minute or until it takes damage.
    • Aura of Warding. Beginning at 7th level, friendly creatures within 10 feet of Beverly have resistance to damage from spells. At 18th level, the range expands to 30 feet.
    • Undying Sentinel. Beginning at 15th level, when Beverly is reduced to 0 hit points and is not killed outright, he can choose to drop to 1 hit point instead. In addition, he no longer suffers the effects of old age.
    • Elder Champion. At 20th level, Beverly can assume his own version of a Symbiotic Entity, modeled after Moonshine.[2] When in this form, he regains 10 hit points at the start of every turn, the casting time of paladin spells is reduced to a bonus action, and enemies within 10 feet of him have disadvantage on saving throws against his paladin spells and Channel Divinity abilities.
  • Extra Attack. When taking the Attack action, Beverly can choose to attack twice.
  • Aura of Protection. Bev has a "greasy teen aura" extending 10 feet around him. This aura gives a friendly creature (and himself) a bonus equal to his charisma modifier on any saving throw. At 18th level, the range increases to 30 feet.
  • Aura of Courage. Beginning at 10th level, allies within 10 feet of Beverly cannot be frightened while he is conscious. At 18th level, the range increases to 30 feet.
  • Improved Divine Smite. Beginning at 11th level, whenever Beverly hits a creature with a melee weapon, the creature takes an extra 1d8 radiant damage.
  • Cleansing Touch. Beginning at 14th level, Beverly can use his action to end one spell on himself or on one willing creature that he touches.

Feats[]

  • Magic Initiate. By reading some scrolls that Tonathan gave him, Bev became a Magic Initiate. This allowed him to take one first level spell and two cantrips from the Bard spell list. The spell was Feather Fall, and the cantrips were Mage Hand and Minor Illusion.
  • Inspiring Leader. Beverly can spend 10 minutes inspiring his companions. He can choose up to six friendly creatures and grant each creature temporary hit points equal to his level + his Charisma modifier. This can be used once every short or long rest.

Special Abilities[]

Titan of Bahumia Ability[]

Given by Telaine's Divine Heart[3]

  • Action Surge. Beverly has the 2nd Level Fighter feature Action Surge.
    • Beverly can push himself beyond his normal limits for a moment. On his turn, he can take one additional action. Once he uses this feature, he must finish a short or long rest before he can use it again.

Fire Elemental Champion[]

  • After becoming champion of the Fire Elemental, Bev's strength score went up by one and he gained resistance to fire damage.
